Stop for a moment and think about how you use your time. If you need to, take out you calendar or a piece of paper and think about your typical day.
People have lots to say about time. Let me share some with you.
- Its too short of a time period
- I have lots of time
- I don't have time (side note: you give time to things that are important to you.)
- They say time waits for no man
- I have all the time in the world
- Wasted time, wasted time
- Wait a minute
- This'll just take a little time
- Time out!
Have you heard some of these sayings before? I am sure you have. When we think of time, we all have the same amount of time in a day (24hrs). We all have the same amount of months in a year, twelve. However, as we age the days and months get shorter and shorter. Let me put it this way. If you are 50 and average, you have 9,125 days left to live. If you are 65, you have 3,650 days left to live. The average person lives 27,375 days. It is important that we make each one of our days count.
You may be thinking, "time management, I don't have time for that. To sit and schedule what needs to be done is a waste of time." If I told you that time management is not as difficult as you think or say it is, would you give it a try? Let me put it this way for you. If you fail to plan, plan to fail.
Here are 4 things to help you PLAN your time more affectively.
- Take Time To Pray
Before you do anything with the rest of your plan you will want to take a moment and pray. Seek God on how to best use your time. You may want to do this the night before. For example take the last half hour of your day and pray.
- Make a List
Once you have prayed, start making your list of 3-6 items that you are wanting to accomplish for the day.
- Take Action
Now that you have completed the first two steps, you will want take action. You may have something on your list that you have been procrastinating and pushing to the side. You will want to start by completing that task first, by eating the frog.
- Build a Network
As you think through the PLAN and write things down you may find a task that you can delegate to someone in your network. Your network is the people on your team or from within the organization. By building a network of people allows you to focus on the things that only you can do. You might be saying, "well, I can do the task." Sure you can, but does this help you PLAN your time more affectively? If not, get it off your plate.
Are there any other things that you can think of that would help with time management?
