The Journey of Letting Go

In life, there are moments when stepping back can feel like failure, but in truth, it can be a step toward freedom and discovery. Between August and November, I found myself on such a journey, one that began with a decision to step away from pursuing my doctorate—a path I thought I was meant to follow. What unfolded, however, was a season of unexpected growth, spiritual renewal, and deeper intimacy with God.

Releasing the Plan

The decision to pause my doctoral studies was not taken lightly. It was a choice wrapped in prayer, reflection, and a sense of divine prompting. While there was some disappointment in letting go, there was also an unshakable peace, a quiet assurance that this was not the end of my learning but the start of something new.

Redeeming the Time

Though I set aside formal studies, I committed to reading every book required for my coursework. I approached them not as academic assignments but as tools for personal transformation. Two works, in particular, became pivotal: Spiritual Rhythms by Mark Buchanan and Sacred Pathways by Gary Thomas.

Buchanan's insights on slowing down, finding rest, and creating rhythms of grace spoke directly to the pace of my soul. I began to recognize the need for intentional sabbath moments, not just on Sundays but woven throughout my weeks.

Gary Thomas expanded this awakening, helping me see the diversity in how people connect with God. Sacred Pathways invited me to explore how my own spiritual temperament could shape my worship and deepen my relationship with Christ.

Rhythms of Renewal

This journey became less about what I had let go of and more about what I was gaining. Inspired by these readings, I began cultivating practices that centered me on God's presence. I explored creative expressions of worship, found solace in nature, and rediscovered the joy of silent prayer.

Through this, I realized that academic achievement was never the goal—knowing God was. The disciplines I once approached with obligation became delightful as they drew me closer to His heart.

A New Horizon

Now, as November comes to a close, I find myself standing on a new horizon. The path forward may not include a doctorate, but it holds something far richer: a life anchored in sacred rhythms and pathways. This season has taught me that stepping away is not failure but a reorientation, aligning my heart more fully with God's purposes.

For anyone in a season of letting go, I encourage you to lean into the unknown with trust. God's plans are rarely what we envision, but they are always for our good.

As Mark Buchanan writes, "The sabbath is about trust. It's about relinquishing control and allowing God to hold the world together while we rest." Indeed, God has held my world together—and through His grace, it has flourished.

What season of growth might God be calling you to embrace?

The Sacred Quiet: When Silence Speaks

It’s been a while. The pause wasn’t planned, but necessary. Life has a way of ushering us into valleys we never asked to walk through. Over the past few months, my family and I have been navigating one such valley, marked by the sudden passing of someone we dearly loved. It’s the kind of grief that presses pause on everything else. Writing, ministry, even the most basic routines—suddenly all felt heavier, quieter, slower. And in that sacred quiet, I’ve learned something: sometimes, silence is a teacher. Grief has a voice. It speaks in sighs, memories, and unfinished sentences. It also speaks in silence. I used to resist that silence, afraid that stillness might lead to stagnation. But I’ve come to believe silence isn’t the absence of God—it’s often the space where we most clearly hear Him whisper. A Season of Reprieve In our fast-paced world, taking a step back feels counter-cultural. But I’ve come to see that it’s deeply biblical. Jesus often withdrew to lonely places—not just to rest...

Signs. Signs are everywhere. Each sign that we see tells us something different whether on the road, in a restaurant, or even on a trail. Signs, according to the dictionary is “a gesture or action used to convey information or instructions.” Signs give direction and instruct individuals as to what they are looking at or even where they are going. As individuals who are attending and visiting churches, they are looking for the signs; signs of a healthy leadership team and church or body of believers. In this post I will share with you five signs of a healthy team and church. Sign 1: Each member loves Jesus Loving Jesus is more than just words. It is a life style that involves every part of who we are. Loving Jesus is being totally devoted to Him.
